Welcome to the Silverado Amateur Radio Society (SARS) online newsletter. We hope to provide you with the latest happenings in the Club and in Amateur Radio in general in a timely manner. Our objective is to provide a "live" newsletter that will be updated throughout the month as events occur. When an item is added it will be flagged with this symbol:

All contributions (news, not monetary) will be gladly accepted. Submit your offerings via email to: Editor

Do you have a photograph you'd like to share? An item you want to sell? An announcement of an upcoming event? We'd like to hear about it. Naturally, we prefer Ham Radio oriented material, but other genres might be considered.

What's the value of that resistor? The cat can't figure it out either.

Memory Tricks  If you're thinking about upgrading to General after July 1st, you might find this useful.

A few months back we posted a link (see the links section at the bottom of this page, not the FOOTER. Entitled "Tips for Operating Repeaters". This month we offer Operating Practice by ON4WW, Mark Demeuleneere of Belgium. The advice given in this well written page is perfect for the new HF operator and even old timers could benefit.

CQ Serenade.  Here's a link to a different kind of radio museum. Located in the Monterey area, WA6DIJ has an impressive collection of old-time radios.  If you browse this site with IE you can hear some very unusual background music!  Thanks KI6GPN

Looking Back:  From the SARS Newsletter, June 1968

SARS was in there pitching at Skaggs Island on Armed Forces Day, May 19th 1968.  There were nine positions and of the nine SARS had their share.  Although there was some criticism heard that people didn't get to operate because the positions were already filled, nevertheless, some of the SARS people had an opportunity to pound brass and hoot-n-holler on SSB.

NPG made 2175 contacts for the twelve hour period from 7AM PDT until 745PM PDT.  That's a little over 12 hours but to be sure to those who stuck it out for the entire period it seemed like eleventy-seventy hours!  We didn't beat NSS, but we gave them a run for their money.  On several occasions during the day we were ahead of them but it was impossible to maintain the lead.

Today's scientific question is: What in the world is electricity and where does it go after it leaves the toaster?

Here is a simple experiment that will teach you an important electrical lesson: On a cool dry day, scuff your feet along a carpet, then reach your hand into a friend's mouth and touch one of his dental fillings.  Did you notice how your friend twitched violently and cried out in pain?  This teaches one that electricity can be a very powerful force, but we must never use it to hurt others unless we need to learn an important lesson about electricity. Another Reason to use UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).  The things you learn from Amateur Radio!  In last month's news letter I included a Smart-Alec question ( see Sample Test )which asked: "In 2007, on what date will the shortest day of the year occur?"

This question has been around at least as long as the one that asks "where will they bury the survivors?" so I figured most people would guess "December 21st".  The smart-Alec answer  of course, was "They're all the same length; 24 hours".  One sharp eyed reader sent me the following answer:

Debbie Liddel,  KC0RYF of Lawrence, Kansas writes:

I wish to offer an alternate answer to your bonus question.  Since Congress has seen fit to switch from real time to daylight savings time,  there are only 23 hours in March 11, 2007.  Likewise there will be 25  hours in one day in early November.

Of course, Debbie.  I should have thought of that!  And by the way congratulations on your new upgrade!  Thanks for the response.  I got to thinking about Daylight Saving Time and realized I don't know very much about it.  A quick trip to Wikipedia.org provided a wealth of information:  read more

The Napa Valley Marathon Story

by Brittany Evans KG6SNO

The Marathon started early for me, or maybe you could just say late because I spent so many hours the night before preparing my “posse” (Eric Anderson- KG6ABG and Tyson Hunter- KI6FQQ ). So getting to bed early was not an option for me. Morning came and it was already warm with a tint of pink and orange amongst the clouds that almost made me wish I was one of those runners    Read More
